Dear Mother-

Thanks very much for your letter – Yes I was adrift last week with my letter I am afraid – but I expect you have got it by now.

Not much news from this part of the world – I’ve just had a letter from Ben & Marjorie – Ben does’nt like being couped up all day at all- but otherwise seems happy enough.

I’ve “spoken” to that nephew of Mrs Black’s – he’s in my “division”, all same “company” – so I speak to him a good deal – quite a nice fellow – he was awfully surprised when I said I knew all the Blacks quite well-

I am glad to hear Ruth has fixed it up with Guy’s Hospital – seems a long way off though – Aug: 9th – but she deserves a good bit of leave first – does’nt she?

I get plenty of exercise these days – which is a good thing – as I was getting fearfully out of training with all that long leave.

Our quarter deck is huge – so we always play hockey every evening now & we also have a boat’s crew under way – in which I pull.

Miss Kellie seems to be installed as a Delafordian – I must say I liked her awfully – & everyone says something about her in their letters-

best love to all

your ever loving son

Paul

Dear Mother.   V. many thanks for sending my clothes along- & for your letter- The cable was from Dick & Ted – & I suppose has been following me about some time.

I’m awfully pleased to hear Jane found some rooms at last- I wonder how her show is getting on- I wrote to her the other day & ordered 2 Boxes – but I have’nt got them yet-

We are still fairly busy up here – and now it’s started to rain every day – which makes it rotten – I went onboard my old ship the other day – everyone has gone away except one fellow left in command-

I heard from Ben yesterday – she seems highly pleased with her new Bank job-

Nothing more has happened about my earache – can’t think what it could have been-

Hope everyone is awfully fit-

Best love to all-

your ever loving son

Paul

His old ship was HMS Gloucester.

29 January 1916 – Paul to Gertude

29th

Dear Mother –   Excuse pencil – but can’t get any ink at present. I arrived up here safely – yesterday morning – beastly journey – & I was very tired – & it’s fairly strenuous at present – & will be for some time.

Will you see if you can find my old-ish uniform monkey jacket. I think it must be in my room somewhere – you can tell it by the  right arm’s gold lace which is fairly wobbly – & one of the rings on the sleeve is sort of unstitched & bent back a bit. It must be at home I think- if you find it please send it as soon as possible-

Hope everyone at home is flourishing – bestest love to you all – your ever loving son

Paul

Dear Mother.   Very many thanks for your letter and all the news – what heaps of old friends you seem to have had at home during Christmas and New Year- wherever did Archie Fox come from. I do so wish I could get home to see Willie – but it is no use- my leave is not due till about the 6th Feb – and I cannot possibly arrange anything else.

I had a letter from Jim saying he was stranded at Plymouth & he wanted to know if I knew anybody down there whom he could go and see – while he was waiting- I also heard from Sheina –  dear she seems awfully stressed about Jim going

Did’nt I thank you for those handkerchiefs so sorry – they were lovely  – and are most useful at present as I am in the midst of a beastly cold – much better now though thank goodness – How sickening about Rosamund’s thumb- must be jolly painful – but she writes awfully well with her left hand. So glad you heard from Digby – I often see him just for a moment – he told me he was writing to you

We were to have given our show again to-night – but circumstances have made it impossible so I don’t suppose we shall do it again at all – I am rather sorry in a way.

There must be something in this peace stand I suppose – but I hope we have nothing to do with it yet.

With much love to you all

from ever your loving son

Paul
