5 February 1916 – Richard to Gertrude

SHEPHEARD’S HOTEL
CAIRO

Sunday Feb 5.

My dear Mother.

I am writing from here just to tell you how we are getting on. I have had 3 days’ leave & came here for some fun. It’s a great spot & I am sorry to be leaving tonight. I have just met Mrs Palui, you remember a Miss Elliot & we’ve been talking over Camberley & everyone. You remember her I am sure. Last night we had a lovely dance here & went on after to the next hotel for some more.

I’d like to be stationed here.

Best love to all

yr loving son

Richard.

4 February 1916 – Ted to Gertrude

Feb 4th 1916

Dear Mother

Very many thanks for two letters from you, both of which have been to Bombay & back. I got no letters from Delaford by the last mail except one from Ben, saying you had got my account of that show from Nell. I can’t think what happens to all my letters, I got 21 in a bunch yesterday from India, England, & all over the shop; but perhaps they will be a trifle more settled in future.

I also got that letter case with the horse shoe in it; I was firmly convinced that that had gone with all my other treasures, but I’m most fearfully glad I left it behind now. Also all the letters enclosed in the case arrived safely; many thanks.

Nothing much doing here now; it is gorgeous weather and we are fairly busy all day. There does’nt seem much doubt that we are moving further East fairly soon now, but what our ultimate destination is I cannot say, as no one seems to know for certain. Your letters are dated 28th & 29th December, so are somewhat belated; I have got the pink papers regularly & they are a great boon in the mess. Also the weekly times.

I do hope old Topher manages to wangle a few days’ leave soon, he certainly deserves it. I expect I shall get one or two more letters this week yet, as I think there is a bi-weekly mail to Egypt; we generally get 2 mails here. I told Nell to tell you to send letters to me to the Garhwal Rifles, c/o India Office London, it saves change of address if we move, and they get here just as soon as if you send them direct. You may have to post a little earlier, but they would tell you that at the India Office. I’m very fit & well. Love to all yr loving son

Ted

My dear Mother.

Many thanks for your letter Jan 12, also the enclosure. So Wiggs at last got home, I expect Ben was too busy to write and tell me all about her adventures. I hope I shall hear soon. Letters seem to come at all times & there must be a bit of a muddle in the various P.O.s. I would suggest Jane goes on the stage, why does’nt she write to Evelyn & get her advice. She knows her address & it’s quite a good profession.

Paul is lucky to get the Malaya, it must be a good job as she’s a big ship. Chubbie has recovered I suppose form her measles and is touring around again. Wonder how she is getting on. Jim expected to be kept in France did’nt he?

The Coat has’nt come from the Aquascutum yet but it rains so little here that I shan’t really want it. Yes write & hurry up Dutton & Thoroughgood. June’s very fit, only an order has come round saying no one of any rank may keep a dog, but as we are not sure of being fixtures here it does not affect me yet. It’s a nuisance though I expect Susan does enjoy a basket, very nice of you to give it to her.

Yes I took those shirts & have sent them to Ted. I was over for 2 nights staying with him & enjoyed it awfully. Their camp is much nicer than ours, much cleaner & so nice having trees about. I went for a long ride all down by the Gulf & picked up some lovely shells that I must try & send you.

We also went from here the other day 4 of us on mules, quite amusing. Otherwise we do nothing much. We’ve had one or two games of hockey & football against neighbouring hospitals, so far we’ve been successful. I met a Peak here the other day, a cousin of the Ashtead lot.

I will cable you when we hear any news.

Best love to all

yr loving son

Richard.

The phrase “Jim expected to be kept in France” suggests he’d finally been posted outside Britain, if not to the front.

Wiggs, or Ivan Bennett, was Ben’s fiancé.

Sunday

Dear Mother.   V. many thanks for sending my clothes along- & for your letter- The cable was from Dick & Ted – & I suppose has been following me about some time.

I’m awfully pleased to hear Jane found some rooms at last- I wonder how her show is getting on- I wrote to her the other day & ordered 2 Boxes – but I have’nt got them yet-

We are still fairly busy up here – and now it’s started to rain every day – which makes it rotten – I went onboard my old ship the other day – everyone has gone away except one fellow left in command-

I heard from Ben yesterday – she seems highly pleased with her new Bank job-

Nothing more has happened about my earache – can’t think what it could have been-

Hope everyone is awfully fit-

Best love to all-

your ever loving son

Paul

His old ship was HMS Gloucester.
